:: Benefits of Yoga -Maggie Verderame
What Is Yoga?
Yoga is a time tested, scientific approach to physical & mental well
being consisting of physical enhancement through stretching & endurance
exercises, breathing exercises and mental exercises. The word yoga literally
means “union” or “to yoke/join two or more things together.”
Yoga originated in the East thousands of years ago and is now widely practiced
around the world.
Who Can Practice Yoga?
Everyone! There are several different styles of yoga making it appropriate
for all levels of students from young children to senior citizens. Anyone,
male or female, athletic or not, looking to enhance their life with physical
fitness and balance while having fun will enjoy yoga.
What Will I Get From Yoga?
Through the practice of yoga, you will explore new heights in your physical
ability which will bring you to new levels of calm and focus. Yoga is
a fun means to grow in your flexibility, endurance and strength. Yoga
promotes great cardiovascular, immune system & nervous system health
as the movement & breathing help to detoxify the body and increase
energy. The weight bearing aspects of yoga have been proven to aide with
degenerative bone disorders such as osteoporosis while the alignment principles
utilized can improve and sustain healthy posture.
Consistent yoga practice will continue to prove it’s benefits over
time. The longer one practices, the more they receive. With yoga, there
is no plateau, there is always somewhere new to go - a new challenge to
meet, a new obstacle to overcome, a new level of inner and outer strength
to achieve. Yoga is one of very few physical practices one can continue
reaping the benefits of over a lifetime.
Why Yoga?
One of the most surprising aspects of yoga is that you can actually gain
a level of physical fitness equal to the typical western work out resulting
in body shaping, weight management, and increased strength. The experienced
yoga body appears supple with long, lean muscles and displays remarkable
upper and lower body strength and flexibility. The difference between
yoga and western work outs is that with yoga - even in the most advanced
classes - you’re encouraged to move at your own pace, creating a
safe practice that allows you to honor yourself exactly as you are. New
practitioners are usually impressed with what a “work out”
yoga really is.
Since yoga was designed to remove energy blocks in your system so as to
“still and quiet the mind,” you are always given the opportunity
to reflect on your practice experience through relaxation and meditation.
This element of yoga gives practitioners a chance to explore them self
holistically. In addition to a lean, strong body, a consistent yoga practitioner
will learn how to quiet their inner critic, open their mind and release
judgment and ego.
What Do I Need To Know Before I Take A Yoga Class?
You’ll want to wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely
in. Women do fine in basic work out wear, while men prefer long, loose
sweats or bike shorts under basketball style shorts. You will practice
in bare feet. You might like to have a small towel in case you sweat.
At It’s Yoga we provide quality yoga mats and props free of charge.
We have bottled water available at the front desk for just 75¢.
It’s best to practice on an empty stomach. Usually eating lightly
about 1 - 2 hours before practice gives ample time for digestion. If you’ve
never been to a studio before, give yourself about 15 minutes to fill
out paperwork, speak to your instructor and get acquainted with your surroundings.
Be sure to inform your instructor about any physical issues you have,
so they may work with you to make it the best experience possible. Feel
free to ask your yoga instructor any questions - a good yoga instructor’s
intention is always to meet their students’ needs fully.
